never enough time

April 15, 2008

spring is finally happening, its possibly my favourite time of year. its nice to see the folks who weren’t brave enough to ride in the winter finally get their scooters on the road. the potholes can be just as tricky as the ice and slush that’s passed, i’ve already earned a slow leak in my rear tyre. because of this seasonal danger, i try not to ride with my camera around my neck, but i was guilty of it the other day when the afternoon the weather was just bliss, and caught a shot of this interesting house on my way to the camera shop. since its not unbearably cold, this means i step outside the studio with my clients. recently i worked with david brown, a model and member of the NIA dance troupe to update his portfolio. i used a variety of back lighting in the studio to get the shot we wanted, and shot with natural light at night outdoors, one of the benefits of using an ƒ/1.4 L glass lens.

over the last few months, i’ve gotten inspired to work again with film. i had taken nearly a ten-year hiatus but felt it was time to take out the fillum cameras. its been an instant love affair, and i ended up buying a hasselblad 503cx, because i have so many memories working in the confines of a square frame and simply wanted the best flexible setup out there. i’m blown away by the amount of support and patience offered by mark crosby, kathleen dooher, ryuji suzuki, and luke healey, all amazingly talented photographers. i could have done it without them, but at a much slower pace!

with the hassy, i did a shoot for igleheart, a custom bicycle frame shop that is introducing some apparel. turns out erik peterson has earned quite a bit of admirers since the photograph(s) went public. this shot was taken with velvia film. this is a merino wool pullover with a zipper in the back, made for cyclists.

i spent easter with a few friends eating sammidges at a bar and then we headed over to the shop in allston where there’s always plenty of interesting stuff to look at – scooters, military vehicles, rock climbing jeeps, etc. i photographed athena because she has a nice sense of style, and there was an interesting prop. also shot with velvia…

in other news, i let go of my canon 20d and sold it to my good friend sid, who shoots quite a bit of bands and needed a camera because his broke. i am guessing he will be the proud owner of a 24-70mm lens soon, if he’s not already caught the glass bug, which is quite viral! as the trees grow greener and the grass fills in, i’ll be busy shooting more residential work. i am an organising partner in a photographic exposition planned for this fall, so i am also juggling that, amongst two other personal projects. there aren’t enough hours in the day, if i’m going to be honest. did i mention i’m off to new orleans in a few weeks?
