though photographers never expect this from any client, i am often surprised with a show of appreciation either in the form of a regular tip, or with random, fun little gifts. kelly and patrick had a second wedding reception out of state shortly after their wedding. even though summer is peak wedding season, i wanted to make sure my client was able to show a few photos to their guests who were unable to be at their main wedding reception. it took some staying up into the weee hours of the night, but i was able to pull together what they wanted in record time. when kelly told me i should be expecting something in the mail, i had no idea what it was. kelly remembered how much i loved scooters, and got me the above lovely scooter pouch that i keep talking about to everyone.

and for those who are interested, now i will blog about scooters. i love them, as much as photography. below are some of my favorite scooter photos and scooter portraits (some taken while riding) in no particular order:

on a side note, these are not mopeds, there are no pedals.

i had a ton of fun shooting sara and andy’s beach wedding. during their ceremony (and of course during the important moments) the rain began to fall. it soon cleared up and we took a few photos along the water before making our way to the reception venue. as i am working on editing a ton of weddings, here are just a few teasers followed by a link to some more photographs.

the challenge continues! more photos at millenium park! i love this white sculpture better than cloud gate. the sculpture has these curves that take your eye around the negative space in a manner that reminds me of the images of one of my favorite photographers, herb ritts. he played around with lights and darks and curves to create refreshing images within a tired genre. the couple i photographed for this engagement shoot is having me photograph their wedding at the newly renovated spertus museum. spertus is just as much a piece of art as it is an architectural marvel. we were able to walk around inside touring the stark, beautiful spaces where the wedding ceremony and reception will be held. i even bumped into someone who was a guest at another jewish wedding i photographed recently.

next month, i will be photographing a rooftop wedding for this fun couple. for their engagement shoot they coordinated two great outfits for two great locations. the first being the infamous bean and millenium park, and the second location being a historic beach house.

i thought it would be a challenge to photograph couples at millenium park while still keeping it fresh, because it seems like more and more people choose this location. the truth is, i am often inspired by my subjects’ personality and the colors they are wearing and try to compose my images in a way that compliments this.

i was hired by adela and carlos for their engagement and wedding photography. for those who have followed my blog, you may remember that i also had the opportunity to meet and photograph their beautiful daughter alex for both a studio portrait session and her quinceañera. soon adela and carlos will be getting married at the mart plaza hotel, but first we wanted to make sure we had a chance to work together for an engagement shoot. adela found a unique location for this… a lighting store with a fantastic roof deck. below are some photos from their recent photo session.

before their wedding, i had the opportunity to work with jen and grant during their engagement photo session. they selected to shoot at rock n’ roll mcdonalds so i wasn’t surprised when i found out that the shoot was profiled on the popular blog rocknrollbride.com. have a look here. when they added some McRomance into their engagement shoot, i had to ask, what can i expect at the wedding? they did not let me down! i was anxious to see what she had up her sleeves. jen cleverly integrated the color blue as a tribute to grant’s favorite team duke as well as tying in a playstation theme (see cufflinks below), and left plenty of room for her obsession with skulls. the hampshire house wedding venue was transformed for jen and grant’s dream wedding. for the ceremony, grant’s best man served as the officiant by becoming a JP for a day, by getting his one-day marriage designation in the state of massachusetts. they had one of the coolest sets of bridesmaids and groomsmen i’ve worked with. after the ceremony, the newlyweds allocated a bit of extra time beyond traditional formal photographs to allow for some creative portraits walking around downtown boston in the boston public garden and an MBTA subway station. at the reception, DJ addam bomb provided music that had everyone on the dancefloor, including jen’s 86 year old grandfather rocking out to billy idol’s “white wedding.” if you are having a boston wedding and are looking for a DJ that can throw down great alternative music, yet still has a tasteful demeanor, this is your guy.

“I honestly thought the pictures of the wedding couldn’t outdo our engagement photos, but they did!!! To be honest, after our wedding was over I was having regrets about not hiring a videographer. The whole evening was so amazing and everyone was so animated that I thought I needed to capture it on film. I received heather’s pictures in the mail the yesterday and realized my regrets were COMPLETELY unwarranted!!!! I felt that Heather’s pictures captured the ENTIRE essence of the night PERFECTLY and in ways video could never accomplish. Thanks for showing me the power of photojournalism, Heather!!!”

kelly and patrick were recently married and i had the pleasure of photographing their day. it began at hotel indigo, where the colors of the interior space were perfectly in concert with everything going on that day. kelly’s sister was the maid of honor and she joined their mother in helping prepare the bride for her wedding. with time to spare, we headed to the lobby and lounge and made great use of the unique chairs for some photos! after capturing every little detail and moment of kelly getting ready, i hopped in the limo with the ladies and grabbed a few shots as we headed to the wedding ceremony. i have noticed a trend recently where couples are looking for creative locations to tie the knot, galleries are a popular option. the groom had let me know in advance that he was planning a surprise first dance with the bride right after the ceremony. the newlyweds and i snuck outside amidst some fabulous natural light and grabbed a few shots before they returned inside to cut the cake. there were plenty of smiles to go along with the dancing, and even the children joined in.

“I cannot imagine a better photographer for our wedding. Her unobtrusive style was perfect, especially for my camera-shy husband, and she was very gracious and patient with all of the guests taking flash photos, which I can say from attending other weddings, is not always the case. Many guests commented on how much they liked her. She was always quick to respond to my questions– and most importantly, the photos turned out beautifully!”

before their wedding on the 24th of this month, michelle and tom wanted to meet to do a practice shoot since neither of them have never been in front of a professional photographer. michelle scouted out this kitschy coastal location and we saw many painted rocks, most of them were covered with short messages of love. i wonder if tom will come back in the wee hours and paint a message for michelle in time for their wedding.

who wants tom to paint something for michelle!?!? comment below!

lots of natural smiles, i think they are at ease with the camera!

we found what we thought was a time capsule but who knows. whatever it was, it wouldn’t budge and was staying shut.

along with my series of little vignettes of people, here’s one of their shoes. shoes show everyone’s personality.

we also found a nice arrangement of stones with a spot in the middle for a fire pit.

i wrapped up the shoot with a nice silhouette of the couple.

on a weekday afternoon, i shot jackie and mike’s engagement session entirely with natural light. we had really great colors to work with that were enhanced by the late afternoon color cast. i’m excited for their chicago wedding this autumn at the newly renovated mart plaza. thanks jackie and mike for such an incredible afternoon! for a full gallery of jackie and mike’s engagement pictures, click here.
