Happy Halloween, albeit a day early! I had the pleasure of recently working with Jennifer and Kyle on an engagement session during foliage week this autumn, before their upcoming winter wedding. After Jennifer and Kyle had hired me for their Rookery Building wedding, we realized that I was the same wedding photographer that her good friend Jessica had hired me for her rock ‘n roll wedding. At Jessica and Dan’s wedding, I ran into Jennifer! On the morning of Jessica and Kyle’s shoot, we had lots of red, orange, green and autumn colors to work with and incorporate into their photographs. Pumpkins, gourds, apples, all sorts of great fall stuff all around.

Todd and Megan

Todd and Megan were so fun to photograph. They had such strong magnetism towards each other. They came to the shoot with energy and excitement that really stood out. Indian wedding photography is one of my favorites. The Banerjee wedding was no exception! From the start of the day until the dancing at the reception, hundreds of friends and family gathered to show their love in celebrating with the bride and groom. There was so much emotion during the day. During the kanya agaman where the bride arrived with her bridesmaids and sahelis, the room was filled with anticipation as she kept her eyes hidden with the betel leaf. The energy picked up as the bride and groom had their firest glance. The ceremonies were very personal but everyone appeared to have such a strong connection. At one point during the mandap, the fire got a bit tall and everyone could see that the room was full of wonder as it quickly was kept under control. The ceremony finished flawlessly and the newlyweds went to a park for some photos before their wedding reception. Their guests gathered over food, drinks, and dancing, and shared stories and laughs with the bride and groom. This was the bride’s farewell to the city she called home, and the couple now calls New York home. Congratulations to the both of you on your marriage!

Yellow wedding inspiration!

October 28, 2010

Ken and Hannah’s wedding was so fun. For those of you who I have photographed, you probably know how much I love yellow, as you are surely familiar with my yellow Hideo Wakamatsu trolley suitcase that I carry around filled with camera gear. I was thrilled to see that this wedding was loaded with lots of vibrant yellow wedding details such as flowers, personalized custom wedding favors, guestbook, and cake. Its definitely a treat to get weddings like these, because so many weddings play it safe with pink. I love you guys for being bold, daring, and different with your wedding theme! Ken and Hannah had a first look outdoors. The weather was perfect that September afternoon so their ceremony was held outdoors as well. They had such a fun reception. Their friends and family really knew how to party! Hannah’s Maid of Honor suggested that that DJ play Michael Jackson’s Thriller and an attempt was made to do the Thriller dance. A+ for effort, it was good times! Dustin from Style Matters kept the party going strong all night.

Style Me Pretty, the internet authority on weddings, has just featured Alexa and Andrew’s Castle Hill wedding! When I first met with the couple, I learned that they were planning to create some oh-so-pretty details for their summery seaside wedding. When I saw everything in person on the wedding day, I was completely blown away at all of the DIY decorations and how perfect everything looked under such an amazing backdrop. They truly tied their personality into their wedding. Alexa and I brainstormed about where her breathtaking wedding should be featured and we decided to reach for Style Me Pretty even though they are one of the most selective. In fact, SMP is the #1 ranked wedding blog in the United States. Alexa chose the Boston area’s most sought after wedding venue, got crafty with some amazingly creative ideas, and got perfect weather which in turn paved the path for some of my best wedding photography to date. I absolutely love when couples pour their personalities into their wedding day details. It is truly an honor to have these images shared with so many brides through the reach that Style Me Pretty offers.

Photography at night on your wedding day is possible. I had a conversation today with a bride who was figuring out her time line with her wedding planner. They were pretty sure wedding photography outdoors at night was impossible. The photos I am sharing with you below were taken at night without the use of flash. I always try to accurately replicate the exact look during that split second. Unless its absolutely necessary, I prefer to not use flash in certain situations so as to not change the tone of the moment.

Boston wedding photographer downtown near the Omni Hotel

This photo was taken at a winter wedding in downtown Boston right near the Omni Parker House Hotel. If you are having your wedding at the new  Ames Hotel, the modern Nine Zero, or the historic Langham Boston, there are plenty of lovely buildings nearby to step outside during your reception for a quick photo. The photo below was taken during a quick walk from the King’s Chapel, immediately following a ceremony.wedding photographer natural lightAt this destination wedding at the Moon Dance Villas in Negril, Jamaica, the bride and groom had an outdoor evening reception under the stars. There were a few lanterns and strands of white lights to set the scene. I shot this photo without flash.jamaica wedding photography at moon dance villas

For this Chicago winter wedding, we left Saint Alphonsus Church to head over to the reception venue but because the mass ran a bit off schedule, we lost our chance to take photos while the sun was up. The evening skyline was the perfect setting for this photo of the newlyweds.downtown wedding photography at nightWhile it makes sense to take as much of your wedding photography as you can while the sun is up and fit this into your schedule, I am up for the challenge of taking photos under low light.

Indie Bride featured some of my photography today! I am so grateful for the media exposure that my photography has gotten lately. Recently, you may remember I met up with my clients Kristen and Jason and did a shoot at a farmer’s market. For their shoot, they came prepared with engagement shoot props to create a little picnic theme. I had so much fun photographing them, documenting the connection they had together. As a creative photographer, I always prefer capturing emotion rather than propping up my clients in front of a landmark and asking them to smile. We had a blast that morning taking pictures amongst the greatness of autumn. It is not my goal to simply take photos of someone looking pretty in front of a pretty place. I push my clients to have a blast, show who they are, and think creatively. Planning ahead of time pays off because the photos turn out that much more special. I hope this serves as inspiration. Its not often that couples get professionally photographed, so go the extra mile and add some personality to your shoots!

Fog just outdid foliage

October 18, 2010

Fog just outdid foliage. There are a few days for perfect foliage and you can never quite put a finger on when it is going to happen. Some years it creeps up early, and sometimes the rain sweeps away all the colors. I had scheduled to meet with Marta and Will early one morning for a shoot. Mornings are unpredictable sometimes, and often offer nice surprises. Marta wanted to capture the changing colors and try to get a shot of the skyline. It was a mysterious morning as the fog settled in, and as the shoot progressed, a hazy white blanket diffusing the light got thicker and thicker. Colors became increasingly muted and it was challenging to see anything more than a few hundred yards ahead. We were at awe at the fog, and the limitations that were instantly imposed upon us. There was no chance of seeing the skyline, but what we had was quite surreal and beautiful. I had so much fun working with Marta and Will under these challenging circumstances. We worked along the shore line, under trees, and in tall grass to create some great shots. Below are some of the best ones from the shoot. Toward the end of the shoot, the fog decreased a bit, but part of me wished it didn’t. After the shoot, I wondered if I would ever have such a dreamlike scene to work within. The only thing equally as dreamlike is probably Satie’s Gnossienne No. 5 Modéré. I’ll be the wedding photographer for Marta and Will’s upcoming December wedding so stay tuned for more of this lovely couple!couple against beautiful surreal fog with a treeFog during a photo shootfog on the shore linetall grass for engagement photo sessionautumn foliage engagement shoot by heather parker

Garfield Park Conservatory couple Dan and Carolyn met in the dorm they lived in during undergraduate studies. They recently got engaged and selected the conservatory for their wedding venue. After hearing rave reviews from another Garfield Park Conservatory bride and groom whose wedding I photographed, they hired me as their wedding photographer. I had previously photographed several weddings at Bond Chapel and had done a previous shoot at Harper Library, so when Carolyn and Dan mentioned that they wanted to shoot on campus in locations significant to them as well as in a coop bookstore, I was thrilled.

A friend of mine mentioned how great this bookstore was, so I was really excited to see it. A massive, independent bookstore is such a great location for a photo shoot.wedding photographer Heather Parker shoots in a bookstore

I learned a lot about my clients during the shoot, as we browsed through thousands of books. I encouraged them to pick books that were significant to them, or would be fun for a photo. They studied anthropology and physics but it wasn’t necessary to choose titles that were college texts, but they could if they wanted to.garfield park conservatory wedding couple has engagement session in a bookstore

I would like to congratulate my clients Naomi Espinoza Higgins and Andy Higgins, Theresa Hercik and Bob Sun, and Stacey Fruy and Stephen Thorn on being featured in Wedding Belles. I thought it might be interesting to note that two of the three weddings shown had rain on the wedding day, and the photography still turned out great. Theresa and Bob used a red umbrella for a quick kiss out in front of their church. Andy picked up his bride Naomi outside in the rain for some brief but creative photos. Now that I think about it, Stacey and Stephen pictured on the bridge before their ceremony just after their “first look,” narrowly avoided a bit of rain as it started to sprinkle out as we wrapped up their photo session.

So I guess when they say rain on your wedding day is good luck, it might be true since all three of these weddings got published. Congrats guys!

I always suggest to my clients that it is a good idea to plan ahead for rain just in case. Having umbrellas on your trolley or limo is essential. Having backup indoor locations is smart as well. Some indoor locations require permits too so it is a good idea to call well ahead of time for information.
