The The Waldorf Astoria Chicago Hotel is one of Chicago’s most sought after wedding venues for both ceremonies and receptions. What makes it so special is that it has a Chanel inspired design, a European style courtyard, and 5-star chefs. I personally like the this wedding venue because of the spacious suites with loads of natural light. Bridal parties getting ready in these suites have plenty of room for their hairstylist and makeup artist to perform their magic and with so much room there tends to be less clutter. There is also an spa at the hotel, and some of the best restaurants on-site which are perfect for rehearsal dinners and entertaining out of town guests. If it is raining on your wedding day, the Elysian has some great spaces for wedding photography so you don’t have to go too far.

Style Me Pretty has shared some wedding photos from a Gallery 1028 Chicago wedding I was the photographer for recently. Halley and Josh tied in Hungarian and Jewish traditions, along with some new trends at their ceremony and reception. The couple was adorably stylish and put on a super fun party for their family and friends with the help of Chicago’s best DJ Style Matters. The bride wore vintage jewelry, a handmade veil, and put together a well-coordinated theme with the help of Etsy! The bridal party had a fun factor of at least 1,000 as we traveled around the city for bridal party photos. Halley and Josh had tapas style food stations. What I love about Gallery 1028 is that it is a raw loft space close to downtown Chicago with a large capacity that can accommodate both modern ideas and vintage styles.

Many of the Gallery 1028 weddings I have photographed have been featured lately on many wedding blogs including Kristen and Jason’s summer Gallery 1028 wedding on Be U Weddings and Laura and Mike’s autumn wedding at Gallery 1028 on Style Me Pretty,

You can see more photos of the event space at Gallery 1028 here.

Some of my wedding photography from a Gallery 1028 warehouse venue was just featured on Be U Weddings. Last November, I had the pleasure of working with Jason and Kristen. It was one of my first weddings that year where the cold snap was really felt, but the benefit of this is that you can have access to a beach without the crowds for bridal party photos. You certainly have to move quick since the sun sets early this time of year. Jason and Kristen were blast to work with the entire day and were troopers in the freezing weather for outdoor photos! Even though the shuttle bus to their wedding ceremony arrived nearly an hour late and threw things off schedule quite a bit you can see some great photos from their wedding on the blog! The vibrant green and orange color scheme worked perfectly for their modern wedding. Visit Be U Weddings for more photos and you can see the original posting of their wedding by clicking here.

I love wedding days where there is a moment to take some photos outside, especially if the weather is cooperating! Sometimes it can be one of the only times during a wedding day where a couple can spend time with just each other. Now since the clocks have changed for Daylight Savings Time, its important to be aware of sunset time when scheduling wedding photography into a timeline. If you are in the process of setting up your wedding day timeline, your wedding planner will have a good understanding of when the sun sets, and can give you advice on indoor photo locations in case it is too chilly. Keep in mind that since it will be cooler outside this time of year, so if you are heading outside with your bridal party, it is important to be realistic about how much stamina your pals will have in frigid weather. These photos are from the ICA / Institute of Contemporary Art, one of the most unique architectural locations at the Seaport area of Boston.

Rich and Jo

November 12, 2011

Rich and Jo will be getting married at the Ivy Room. I can’t wait to photograph their wedding ceremony and reception. They were referred to me by Sunil and Annie who had their wedding at the River East Arts Center. One recent rainy afternoon, I met up with this lovely couple for a photo session. They chose a bowling alley and billiards hall where I witnessed their playful competitive nature. Here are just a few of my favorite photos from the shoot.

University Club of Chicago is always such a classic Chicago venue to shoot in. I know vintage, rustic chic is “big” right now, but its refreshing to photograph a classically glamorous wedding reminiscent of yesteryear. The welcoming sight of a fireplace, the warm chime of the dinner bells, and the unsurpassed park views are why so many brides choose this timeless wedding venue to host their wedding reception. When Sara met with me to talk about her wedding photography, I was excited to shoot in the Michigan Room since I had previously shot in Cathedral Hall. You might remember Sarah and her fiance Ryan from their West Loop engagement shoot with their great dane Lucy. When their wedding day arrived, it was one of the most perfect days filled with sunshine. I began shooting in a suite at the hotel within the University Club of Chicago.

After Sarah put on her Vera Wang and Jimmy Choos, we headed downstairs to the grand staircase where Ryan was waiting for a first glance at Sarah.University Club of Chicago wedding photographer Heather Parker

We journeyed onward via trolley to some preselected locations for photos with the bridal party. While a lot of couples enjoy smiling in front of landmarks, some of the more special moments are the candid ones. I love how Sarah’s attendants are smiling, helping her with her gown, and looking back to see that everything is just right.University Club of Chicago wedding photographer Heather Parker

Ryan and Sarah were wed at St. Joseph Church with a packed church full of family who traveled as far from Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Carolina. The bride’s 3rd grade students were also in attendance to see their teacher marry.

They also added a modern flair to classic glamour providing some tables with the popular floating candles.chicago wedding photography at university club of chicago by heather parker

Like Cathedral Hall, the Michigan Room has an impressive stone fireplace, rich mahogany walls soaring to a hand-painted ceiling, and signature stained glass windows.

Architectural Artifacts was the ceremony and reception venue that Julia and Tanner chose for their Chicago wedding. Julia and her mother Beverly flew in from Oregon to discuss their wedding photography with me. Beverly helped Julia plan one of the coolest weddings ever. I arrived to photograph Julia and her bridesmaids getting ready at the Chicago Guest House. Since Chicago was the location for their destination wedding and neither of their families resided in the area, they had the entire rowhouse to themselves and it was the most perfect location for getting ready. The bride enlisted the girls from Sonia Roselli to work their magic on the lovely ladies. These photos show how important it is to allow a full hour of getting ready photography on a wedding day because they are filled with emotion and laughter.

We headed out with the ladies bring the bride to her first look with the groom at Northwestern University. Julia’s brother joined us since he was the Man of Honor.

To compliment the purple and silver colors throughout the wedding day, the groomsmen wore purple cufflinks, argyle socks, as well as silver ties and vests. Their pocket folds even had purple edging.

We headed to Northwestern, the university where the couple met and fell in love. We headed over to where Tanner was waiting for Julia. Look at how pretty her bridesmaids were. I adore the alternating colored Siri bridesmaid dresses. The Siri dress came way before the iPhone app!

Before the wedding ceremony was set to begin, Tanner and Julia had access to the 80,000 square foot warehouse for some photo opportunities.

Now keep in mind, we had a scorching hot afternoon on our hands and had just wrapped up cocktail hour. There was already a lot of emotion during the ceremony. Tanner has already at this point wiped a tear from is eye and laughed…. then the unimaginable happened: a bridesmaid fainted. As a wedding photographer that approaches moments as a photojournalist, I briefly hesitated on whether or not I should photograph what was about to happen before my own eyes. While I am not going to include the sequence of photos I took in this blog post, the moments after the fainting you can see here. The mother of the bride Beverly stepped right up to make sure this bridesmaid was alright and ensured this close-knit group of friends that the bridesmaid would be okay and the ceremony was go on. She treated the bridesmaid like her own daughter amidst all the shock (which you can see in the photo below) and bits of laughter.

The ceremony continued but the bridesmaids looked over at their friend who took a moment to sit down, with smiles of reassurance.

With a parade of candle lighting started by the grand parents, the final candle was the unity candle which Tanner and Julia tried so desperately to light.

Architectural Artifacts wedding photography by Heather Parker

Multiple failed attempts were made and the guests roared with laughter.

Julia made the decision that she was going to use a smaller candle if that’s what it was going to take to display a flame of unity during their wedding ceremony.

After an exchange of rings and vows, the recessional began with a “Mazel Tov!” as something shattered. While this ceremony had some minor hiccups, it is probably going to go down as one of the most memorable ones.

Did Tanner know what he was going to receive during the receiving line?

After mingling and more laughter in the atrium, guests headed into the reception for cake cutting, dinner, and dancing. Since this was a destination wedding for both of their families, elements of Chicago were tied into the decor including a skyline on the cake.

After the bouquet toss, the garter toss was supplemented with a football toss. The next few shots so the sequence of the action. The second from this Architectural Artifacts wedding photo was featured on Moment Junkie, a blog that highlights split-second moments captured with a true photojournalistic approach.

I took this photo so you could see how very cool this warehouse wedding venue is. The atrium at Architectural Artifacts is covered is surrounded by several floors of antiques. During the day this loft space functions as a real antique store.

Charles and Dawn’s Tower Club wedding in Chicago was just featured on the local Chicago wedding blog Be U Weddings. I loved the couple’s choice of red, white, and black for the wedding colors. The Tower Club of Chicago is a stately Chicago landmark, whose architectural heritage has been meticulously preserved, but also provides guests with modern amenities and conveniences. It’s a breathtaking historical venue located in the heart of downtown Chicago right on the river at the top of the Lyric Opera.
