Garfield Park Conservatory wedding photos | Dan & Carolyn

Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the most unique wedding venues in Chicago. There are few cities that have spaces this massive entirely devoted to indoor gardens. Dan and Carolyn had hired me after corresponding with Stacey and Steve, another bride and groom who held there wedding at the Garfield Park Conservatory. Stacey and Steve had wonderful things to say about the wedding photography I did. After Dan and Carolyn hired me, I met up with them at the campus of University of Chicago and got to see where they met while going to school. I had visited the university before since I had shot at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel as well as Bond Chapel, but it is always neat to tour different areas of the campus. In the weeks leading up to their wedding, I learned about what the couple had in the plans for their wedding day. Carolyn’s bouquet was going to contain sweet peas since her grandparents call her “Sweet Pea.” In addition to designing his bride’s diamond engagement ring himself, the groom was going to be making chocolate truffles to be used as wedding favors. The bride’s family made wine that was used during the ceremony, and the groom’s grandfather’s tallit (prayer shawl) was hanging in the chuppah. A lot of thought went into personalizing the wedding. I even noticed the design on the wedding stationery resembled that of the engagement ring.

Because of the rain, the couple met for a first look indoors in one of the buildings at the University of Chicago.

Rookery Wedding Photos

Winter weddings can be a challenge for not only a photographer, but also for the ladies in a wedding party. Let’s face it, the groom and his groomsmen get to wear pants, long sleeve shirts, and jackets. A bride and her bridesmaids must face the cold like true champions. The bone-chilling temperatures along with strong wind gusts that only January could offer didn’t throw any curve-balls in the way of Jennifer and Kyle’s wedding. After getting ready at the W Hotel, a pre-planned first look was in order. For those not familiar with this trend in weddings, a first look is a designated time that the bride and groom see each other for the first time, except it happens before the ceremony. The reason the couple chose a first look for their winter wedding is because with a late afternoon ceremony, the sky would be dark and they wanted to have a chance to get some fun wedding photography of the bridal party during daylight hours. After seeing each other for the first time, we all headed to some great locations around downtown to take pictures, including some Rookery wedding photos. A gorgeous ceremony at Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church was followed by a cocktail hour and reception at one of Chicago’s best wedding venues, The Rookery Building. This historic landmark is located downtown in the Loop. Redesigned by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905, it boasts a glass-encased, sky-lit lobby rich with white Italian marble and gold. The famed oriel staircase on the third floor was not to be missed for classic Rookery wedding photos. The lobby was transformed into a ballroom decorated with classical style. Pastis Designs created towering floral centerpieces which were balanced with drapery and lighting design by Art of Imagination.  After guests enjoyed dinner catered by Jewell Events, Arlen Music’s Indigo Band had the dance floor packed for the rest of the night. If you regularly follow my blog, you might recognize a Laura and Mike, whose warehouse wedding I photographed at Gallery 1028. Jennifer and Laura were friends in college, and were guests at each other’s weddings. They had realized without planning to do so, that they hired the same photographer (me)! Onward with Jennifer and Kyle’s Rookery wedding photos!

Prairie Productions Wedding by Chicago Photographer Heather Parker

Beth and Scott’s Prairie Productions wedding was a blast! They started the day getting ready at the historic Palmer House Hotel, which I thought was a perfect way for their families who came in from Iowa to experience the city’s history. We hopped on a trolley and headed over to their wedding ceremony venue. Their church does not allow flash photography, but the windows allow for some great light to come in. After they tied the knot, we got back on the trolley and headed to the park for some photos of the bridal party. I thought the orange and purple color combination worked great with the autumn foliage. Before heading over to Prairie Production, they stopped in with their bridesmaids and groomsmen to their favorite neighborhood Irish pub for a quick pint. Beth and Scott had the biggest smiles as they were surrounded by so many friends and family. I’m not quite sure how many people were at their wedding but everything came together perfectly at this amazing West Loop venue. While it is a photo studio, on the weekends it doubles as an ultra modern loft-like wedding venue. It fits about 150-200 people comfortably and in the warmer months, they have a really cool outdoor space for ceremonies and cocktail hours. Style Matters kept the dance floor jammed for the entire reception.

Over the last few years, so many couples have gone with highly sought after modern unique spaces. They are popping up in every major city and I love it! Boston has the Artists for Humanity Epicenter and the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts in the South End. Chicago has nearly a dozen new, offbeat locations for weddings. Garfield Park Conservatory Wedding Venue in Chicago

Just a few weeks before their wedding in Chicago, Stacey and Steve got a nice workout running the world’s oldest annual road race together: the Boston Marathon. We collaborated on a time line for the wedding day, making sure to allocate time for creative photography around the city before their wedding ceremony began. They are on their honeymoon in Costa Rica, but I thought this would be a nice surprise for them when they get back with a few of my favorite photos from their wedding day.

Since they got married, these Garfield Park Conservatory wedding photos have widely published in Landlocked Bride, Wedding Belles, Beyond Beyond, Forget Me Knot Weddings, and Trendsetting Wedding. Landlocked Bride (two part feature)

In case you missed it, here are some highlights from the couple’s engagement session last year:

If you’ve never visited Chicago, Plensa Crown fountain is made up of glass bricks and behind them are video screens that show the thousands of faces one at a time. There are moments in each video where the person on display purses their lips and water actually spouts from the display, spitting the water out.

St. Alphonsus Church in Chicago wedding photographer

St. Alphonsus Church in Chicago wedding photographer Heather Parker:
Jackie is my favorite kind of bride. she wears shiny red shoes under her wedding gown and goes with a simple bouquet using just red. guess what color her trolley was. yep, you guessed it, red. The wine? Red. Okay, okay you get the picture. though the jackie and mike did a “first look,” because of the limited amount of daylight at this time of year, after the church ceremony at St. Alphonsus Church, it got dark outside very quickly. having to do creative wedding photos outdoors at night can sometimes have some advantages, such as having a sparkling array of city lights as a backdrop. i am really happy with the results.
From the bride:
“I’ve been so excited to see the photos, thank you sooo much for all your hard work on our wedding day.  We had a blast and i’m glad we can now remember more of the moments through our photos. we love the pics.  There’s so many that are truly amazing and totally capture the feeling behind the day.  They were well worth the wait.  I love a lot of the details shots of the flowers, the wine bottles, the table settings, the people signing the guestbook, the tiny flowers on the cake, etc.  The outdoor shots after the wedding turned out fabulous!  There’s nothing we appreciate more about living in the city is when we’re downtown and see all the city lights and the skyline and know that we live here…truly beautiful and those shots are my favorites!”

Gallery 1028 Chicago Wedding Photographer Warehouse Loft

Angela and Sam live in San Francisco and got married in Chicago. I had not met them before their wedding date. They had their ceremony and reception at Gallery 1028 in Chicago. The venue is on Goose Island, and was my first “island” wedding shoot in Chicago. Gallery 1028 is one of Chicago’s coolest wedding spaces and is getting a lot of buzz. owned by Calihan Catering, the gallery is a huge space with tall ceilings, exposed brick and beams, with a true raw loft space. The gallery is very dark inside and provides the perfect atmosphere for a modern, contemporary wedding. There is plenty of parking too. Gallery 1028 could be a challenge to shoot in since there is very little “white” space for a photographer to bounce a flash off. With the right lenses and extra flashes, the night was a success.

The coordinator for the wedding venue and Calihan Catering was friendly and on top of things. she recently got back from maternity leave and has hit the ground running. i am excited for more fun weddings at gallery 1028 in the future.

As many of my blog readers know, I have shot many weddings around the country. the DJ at last night’s event was by far the best DJ I have ever had the opportunity to work alongside. If you ever have the chance to hire Style Matters, you won’t be let down. They are able to blend songs together seamlessly and had generations of family on the dance floor all night with fun remixes of classic hits. he definitely knew how to read the crowd and had a great selection of indie, old school hip hop, and typical run-of-the-mill wedding requests.gallery-1028-ceremony-photographer-chicagoGallery 1028 modern wedding photographyRaw loft wedding venueGallery 1028 wedding photosFrom the client via Yelp Wedding Photographer reviews:

“Heather photographed our wedding at Gallery 1028 in Chicago, and she did an amazing job.  We wanted artistic photos that would retell the story of our wedding day, and that’s exactly what we got.  Heather was professional, creative, and super easy to work with.  Our photos are nothing short of stunning, and we are so glad we hired her!”
