I hadn’t met Kamini and Aum prior to their engagement shoot, but I will be photographing their multi-day Indian wedding. Aum was working in Boston for a well-known biotech. met his soon to be wife through mutual friends. They’ve hired a horse for their baraat and will have about six hundred guests to join them on their mandap and festivities. They had a proper engagement celebration back in Mumbai (Bombay), and opted to have an additional engagement shoot here in the States. I headed to downtown Chicago for this session. For a portion of our shoot, it was raining and its a good idea to make sure there is a backup indoor location in case of inclement weather. We photographed in one of the libraries.

At this particular location, there were some strict rules of where photography could happen, however we must have pushed the boundaries a bit because we got busted for taking a shot in front of an escalator. Actually, we kept getting busted and it was hard to keep a straight face for the miniscule things they were fussing about. I got in trouble for sitting on the floor… Even with the silliness at the library, I had a blast working with them. I have an indian wedding in just a few short days in Harvard Square Cambridge in just a few short days. Its exciting to be invited to take part in photographing such a diverse array of weddings coming up from same-sex celebrations to multicultural ceremonies.

We braved the drizzle and headed outside for some more options.

Emilia and Megan hired me as their wedding photographer for their upcoming big day. They scheduled an engagement session and scouted some interesting places. We found ourselves all helping each other climb seven foot walls and explored some great urban locations. During their shoot, we talked about some of their wedding day details including their plans for wedding reception lighting design,  music, and some table centerpiece ideas. Emilia just finished getting her Masters degree and they now have more time to plan the remaining details of their wedding and were interested in Google Documents helpful wedding planning templates made possible for free by Style Me Pretty. The engagement session began in a rather desolate location where we found a red train car, endless crisscrossing railroad tracks, a bunch of graffiti, and lots of interesting textures to work with visually.

They are my favorite kind of couple: they’ve got an upcoming wedding at a rock ‘n roll music hall and scheduled an engagement session at a massive antique warehouse, which also happens to double as a wedding venue itself. I am really thrilled to be selected as the wedding photographer for such cool couples!

i am not sure what this thing is but its cool…

i love old little cars and if i am doing a photo shoot and see one, it WILL be incorporated into the shoot, just ask my NYC couple from the other day!

While I am invited to document the most special day of a couple’s life as their wedding photographer, I often am invited into the homes of my clients to photograph an engagement session. Many times, these are the couples first home they share together. Choosing to allow a photographer into your home is a very personal decision, but it often allows for a documentation of some of the most natural moments in a very real way.

Ken and Hannah were referred to me by Ken’s coworker Abigail. Abigail hired me as the wedding photographer for her wedding this past September. Abigail referred to me as a ninja photographer, saying “she was a ninja photographer as most of my family and friends don’t remember seeing here throughout the wedding, but she took wonderful shots.” Abigail and Sam had their engagement shoot in a park and I photographed them playing frisbee which you can have a peek at here. Stay tuned for photos from Ken & Hannah’s upcoming wedding!

When I met with Karen and Bob, I had no idea what I was in for, and neither did they. The wind was almost unbearable and it created quite the display of waves crashing. This made a typical shoot location all the more interesting. The challenge to shoot in chilly temperatures against so much wind made the final results of the shoot so much more rewarding! Thanks for being such troopers!

Cynthia works as a planner at five star luxury hotel, and when she and Dave hired me to shoot their wedding, it was especially flattering since she has access to all the wedding vendor recommendations under the sun. Before the shoot, Cynthia was all over the board on making location choices. She then wrote to me “I just need to remind myself to chill and have fun.” She and Dave did just that. The shoot was entirely improvised and we worked with surroundings that jumped out at us. Sometimes, I get requests to have historic landmarks and tourist destinations used during engagement sessions. Often, my favorite shots are taken in tucked away places that catch my eye. Above, a brick alley way and a church garden were simple locations that let me capture some true feelings the couple had for each other. The focus of the photo was themselves rather than a building, or iconic piece of public art.

joanne and kevin will be married this summer. joanne opted to have her hair and makeup trial on the same morning of her engagement shoot so that she could see how the look she was going for would work in photos. this is such a great idea. she even wore her wedding day shoes to break them in! i’m not going to tell you what fabulous color they are (trust me, it will be good!). one secret i CAN tell you is that their wedding will involve palm trees! after the shoot, they went for their tasting from their caterer. talk about a pre-wedding details marathon! i give them an A+ for having a productive day!

now that it is spring, i have many couples hiring me as a photographer to take their engagement photos. when thinking of location ideas for engagement shoots, i always try to encourage my clients to bring their personality to the shoot. i have had couples dress smart, some couples coordinate outfits, and other couples taking a more casual approach. my favorite time of day to shoot is in the morning before my clients go to work, or in the afternoon. i love the warm lighting during these times of days.

PREPARING FOR YOUR SHOOT

before the shoot, plenty of rest, plenty of water. no exceptions! you want to be at the top of your game. some brides use their engagement shoot as the perfect occasion to schedule their hair and makeup trial appointments. this way, you can see how your “look” is going to look in photographs. whether you go with airbrush or liquid make up, most makeup artists know that bridal makeup needs to be applied a bit heavier than usual so that it shows well in photos. while mineral based makeup provides a nice natural glow, i strongly advise against using any makeup that contains a high amount of titanium dioxide as this appears ghostly in flash photography. having professional makeup done for your engagement shoot will allow you to get a feel for your makeup artist and provide a really polished look for your photos.

LOCATIONS

while many couples choose the skyline as a backdrop, i encourage everyone to think outside of the box and bring a bit of your personality into your choice of location. instead of easily having your shoot location be where everyone one else has done theirs, think about your hobbies and interests, and see if you can tie them into your engagement session. it isn’t out of the question to talk to a theater about using their venue for photos. is there a restaurant where you got engaged that would be great for some cozy photos? if you’ve always dreamed of being a fireman, why not take some photos in a cool fire station? did you meet at the gym and want to incorporate that into your photos? do you spend a lot of time in the library studying? i’m all for creative ideas for engagement shoot locations. while some locations require permits, many locations will simply let you use their facility for photos if it is during a time where they are not busy.

i love the amazing complimentary colors of the eerily turquoise river and the bright orange leaves that still seem to be hanging on! this afternoon, mari and mark (M&M get it?)  had their engagement shoot. they might have a destination wedding since often they are cheaper than having a downtown wedding. i have been fortunate to have photographed brides in new orleans, california, new england and new york city and would love more opportunities as a destination wedding photographer! the turquoise color of the river and lake remind me of the waters around the florida keys and those that you see in photos of popular destinations such as puerto rico, aruba, turks & caicos, and bermuda. i will soon have photos to post of the caribbean. patience my friends!
