Animals at weddings: Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Jamaica… they make appearances at so many destinations that I shoot at. Every year I see more and more animals at weddings both at ceremonies and receptions. You might remember Annie and Pete’s Martha’s Vineyard wedding at the Allen Farm Sheep and Wool Company, where we learned that having a wedding on a farm has its perks and quirks! Well over a dozen roosters chased Annie down a path. For a moment, I wasn’t sure if she was going to get attacked or surrounded. When we realized they wouldn’t tear up her gown, we paused for a quick photo. I guess the cowgirl boots come in handy.

Martha's Vineyard wedding venues Allen Farm Sheep and Wool CompanyAt Indian weddings, its fairly common to hire a horse for the baraat. If you happen to be lucky enough to host a wedding in a city with lenient restrictions, its not unheard of to be able to rent an elephant for this once-in-a-lifetime occasion.

Chicago Indian wedding photography baraat horseIf you don’t have access to a farm or a need to rent a horse, man’s best friend can sometimes make his or her way into the wedding day schedule.

Gallery 1028 Chicago wedding photography by Heather ParkerYou never know what sort of uninvited guests show up at a wedding. I was hired as the destination wedding photographer in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and this resident peacock made an appearance.

marthas vineyard allen farm wedding photographer2011 is a wrap! I finished up my 2011 year returning from shooting in Puerto Rico, heading to a New Year’s Eve wedding in downtown Chicago for a bride and groom who came in from Boston. The day was unseasonably warm, and we got a killer sunset. The following morning, I got on a plane for my first 2011 wedding, which was in Toronto at the Soho Metropolitan Hotel. My clients were from Chicago and Bermuda and hosted one of the coolest, most intimate little weddings I have ever been to. Back in Chicago, I photographed Jennifer and Kyle’s winter wedding at The Rookery. Before “wedding season” kicked off in the United States, I headed to shoot another wedding in Jamaica for a Jamaican bride and groom from Washington D.C. Jamaica is one of my favorite places, and each time I go, I meet new friends.

Wedding season kicked off in Boston, with lots of shoots in my favorite neighborhoods. This summer I had three brides named Annie, and two of them had back to back weddings one week after another at River East Arts Center. Annie and Sunil held their ceremony and reception at River East Arts Center, and Annie and Ian got married at Holy Family Parish and River East the following week.

In addition to Massachusetts and Illinois, this year I got to work with couples calling in from Scotland, Bermuda, China, Jamaica, Australia, Puerto Rico, Oregon, California, Virginia, New York, Arizona, Louisiana, Rhode Island, and New Mexico. I might be forgetting some locations as well. Skype calls have become the norm in communicating with couples who plan their weddings from far away. The above image is from Pete and Annie’s Martha’s Vineyard wedding. I think it takes the cake as a top favorite. After the ketubah signing, Annie and Pete made time for some photos on the sprawling grounds of Martha’s Vineyard where we got to walk and shoot amongst all sorts of farm animals. As we headed down a dirt path, roosters began chasing Annie in her cowgirl boots and wedding gown and Pete chased after her. Throughout the thousands images that fill up terabytes of space on my hard drive, I would like to highlight a small fraction of the moments that stood out as my personal best. Thank you for taking a peek at my Best of 2011 Weddings.

Planning your Chicago wedding photography is just one of the many steps you will have to take in putting together your dream wedding. In this blog post, I want to share some information on wedding planning and finding a wedding photographer. There are many brides in any major city for example, scoping out the same Chicago wedding venues you are. Many couples are getting married a year or more away. Setting a date and finding a venue is key.

To take on this process alone or to enlist the help of a wedding planner is an important decision. One often looked after benefit of hiring a wedding planner is that they can help you find unique wedding venues that often don’t advertise in big wedding magazines or on the top wedding blogs. One of my favorite couples Marta and William hired Greatest Expectations Special Events & Weddings for their winter wedding held at a private club. The wedding planner was able to help select a venue that matched the season, location, capacity, and the investment the couple wanted to make. During your engagement, a wedding planner can help you review contracts, understand insurance requirements, coordinate timelines, and keeps numbers (and backup numbers) handy in instances where a limo could be running late. Understanding how an early afternoon wedding ceremony impacts the total wedding cost when a reception that starts five hours later is where a planner’s expertise will come in handy. An experienced event planner who has an assistant can run and go get more ice for the bar at a midsummer tented wedding during a heat wave, set up a late night candy station, and help facilitate donating your flowers at the end of the night. I have worked with a bride who hired a wedding planner to act as a liaison between family members. Another instance where a planner is useful is when brides and grooms may be in school, have busy work schedules traveling frequently, studying for the bar exam, or planning a hometown wedding from out of state.

wedding planner chicago 2011 pick the knot best of weddings greatest expectationschicago wedding planner best of weddings 2011 pick the knot greatest expectationsWhen hiring a wedding photographer, there are several ways to go about this. Ask friends who they used and talk to your wedding planner. If you have certain requirements or styles you enjoy, an event planner will be able to point you in the right direction. It is important to look through a wedding photography portfolio and look for natural, unorchestrated moments. There are a lot of wedding blogs loaded with pictures of pretty things that show the style of a wedding which are great for inspiration and ideas, but after your wedding the photos that tell the story of the day will be much more meaningful than shots that are a catalog of the things you bought.

photojournalism chicago wedding photographer

In the initial stages of planning your wedding, it is fun and useful to see photos of weddings in your venue. It isn’t as important to find a photographer that has shot in your venue, but it IS important to find a photographer that can adapt to challenging situations, who has continued shooting in a church that has lost power and lighting, or was able to still get storytelling photos during an unexpected rain storm at an outdoor beach wedding ceremony.

documentary style wedding photographer serving chicago and bostonBoth of the above photos were on Moment Junkie, one of the best wedding photography blogs that showcases split-second moments that have a high impact and relay part of the story of the wedding day. A close friend of mine is engaged, and I advised her to look for action and emotion in the wedding photography portfolios she was reviewing. A wedding day is a day full of emotion and the photos should certainly reflect that.

The Union League Club of Chicago was where Katie and Matt held their Christmas time wedding reception. Prior to the celebration, they got married at Holy Family Church, which had festive decorations for the holidays. This wedding stands out because Katie and Matt went to St. Ignatius College Prep right next door to the church they would get married at. Lots more photos to come, but I just wanted to share some Christmas time wedding photos for the holidays!

Queensberry Albums are the wedding albums I offer my clients. Just like it took you a while to find the perfect relationship, it took a while for me to find the perfect album bindery. I was finding that a lot of my couples had mixed feelings on deciding between matted or flushmount. Often times, a groom wanted a timeless matted album that from a trend standpoint wouldn’t look dated in 20 years, and a bride wanted a flush mount album which is very “in” right now. The great thing about Queensberry is that, being 100% customizable, they offered a mix between the flushmount and the matted called Duo. What I have found is that most of my clients enjoy a mostly matted album, and for a few pages, they do a full-page flushmount photo. Queensberry also offers pages that unfold which is a big hit.

You might remember Jaqui and John’s InterContinental wedding. They came to Chicago from Melbourne, Australia to get married before heading to South Africa for their honeymoon. I designed their wedding album layout and had them review their album. Skype meetings were the norm for working with on another continent. On a trip back to the States, the groom picked up their album. Its such a great feeling seeing people relive their wedding through turning pages of an album. A Queensberry Album is of the highest quality and will stand the test of time. They are known as worldwide by the best wedding photographers as being the finest bespoke albums. Just like a wedding gown that is customized to each bride’s body, these wedding albums are custom tailored to each wedding. There are certainly low-cost wedding albums available to consumers directly, but the quality compares to a children’s bedtime book with pages that crease and corners that fray. I have seen consumer-made album layouts with 9+ images jammed in on each page and what is created is a wedding album not unlike the cluttered pages of a magazine; no single image stands out. The journey through the story of your wedding day should be a first class experience. If you have any questions or would like to get started with your own custom Queensberry Albums, contact me via the at the top of this page.

Remember Erin and Dean’s Beacon Hill engagement session from this summer? There wedding day finally arrived. I met up with them at the Omni Boston Hotel before their ceremony to get some getting ready photos. Erin’s sister and Maid of Honor is the talented Allison Phalen, a professional wedding florist who owns Allison Phalen Floral Design and saw the awesome bouquets she made for the bride and bridesmaids. As soon as Erin finished getting all dolled up, she headed to the Old City Hall to meet Dean for their first look. The rest of the day was so easy to photograph because their radiant smiles  were never ending! Their friends and family went with me to some of my favorite locations for Boston wedding photos including to the end of Long Wharf where the famous scene from The Departed was filmed of Costello’s confrontation with Dignam and Queenan. While it wasn’t the same sort of confrontation, I did almost get chased by a homeless person while asking to use the location for some bridal party photos. Wedding photography is always an adventure! We got back on the trolley and headed to St. Josephs Church  for their ceremony where the bride and groom smiled at each other just about the entire time. We headed back to Boston’s oldest and most historic hotel for some photos in their famous lobby and on the roofdeck before cocktail hour. The reception had tall centerpieces, uplighting, and skyline views all tied together with a Boston theme. Congrats Erin and Dean on your marriage! While I always shoot in color, I wanted to share some black and white photos from this wedding.
