Boston barn wedding reception venues are highly sought after. After lea and mark hired me to photograph their New England barn wedding, i met with them for some engagement photos in downtown Chicago around springtime on the lakefront. They brought their black lab to include in some of the shots and we had a blast. since meeting them and working with them, lea has passed my name on to several brides. I am always so appreciative when clients pass my name along to others. Word of mouth is where i get most of my work. before i share some of Lea and Mark’s wedding photos, here are a handful of their engagement photos:

it was really so fun working with them during the engagement shoot, and i couldn’t wait for the wedding. after previously photographing a wedding at the barn at gibbet hill, i found that i really enjoyed non-traditional wedding venues. while i wasn’t contracted to bring a second shooter, i could tell lea was planning a very cool wedding that was going to be taking place at a historic church and a barn, so i decided to bring along another photographer to assist. i had a few phone conversations with lea before her wedding and could tell already that many well thought out details were being put into action for this wedding.  when we arrived, lea showed us that barack obama declined her wedding invitation. bummer it would have been cool to get some shots of lea dancing with the president!

during our communication over phone and email before the wedding, lea informed me that she would be wearing the groom’s grandmother’s necklace.

we talked about the couple’s wedding day time line and realized that with a church ceremony running from 4 o’clock until almost 5 o’clock, there would not be much time for any outdoor photos after the ceremony with the sun setting so early in the winter. lea and mark had a “first look” before heading a few blocks down the road to the sea for some creative photos.

its worth being a trooper and making time for outdoor photos even in the winter. this gave the bride and groom some time together during their wedding day before splitting time with all their friends and family.

while the bride and groom live in the chicago area, they brought the groom’s pastor in from nebraska to their new england wedding. while not all churches are flexible to allow use of their space with another officiant, the couple found a great church willing to allow an out of town pastor to perform the ceremony. congregational churches in this area have the sanctuary on the second floor.

when i think of new england, quaint white steepled churches are some of the first things that come to mind.

after the ceremony, everyone headed over to the historic red lion inn for the wedding reception. in a picturesque seaside town, a combination of country french and new england colonial styles provided perfect ambience in a wedding reception venue.

the barn at the red lion inn had an upstairs lofted wrap-around balcony that was used for cocktail hour.

a consistent, navy blue nautical theme was used for wedding. paper goods such as table numbers, menus, and escort cards were designed by the Etsy seller BuddyandBean.

after cocktail hour, the newlyweds descended upon the grand staircase of the barn and immediately began their scheduled first dance.

the cake was from the famed konditor meister bakery

toasts and parent dances followed.

St. Alphonsus Church in Chicago wedding photographer Heather Parker:
Jackie is my favorite kind of bride. she wears shiny red shoes under her wedding gown and goes with a simple bouquet using just red. guess what color her trolley was. yep, you guessed it, red. The wine? Red. Okay, okay you get the picture. though the jackie and mike did a “first look,” because of the limited amount of daylight at this time of year, after the church ceremony at St. Alphonsus Church, it got dark outside very quickly. having to do creative wedding photos outdoors at night can sometimes have some advantages, such as having a sparkling array of city lights as a backdrop. i am really happy with the results.
From the bride:
“I’ve been so excited to see the photos, thank you sooo much for all your hard work on our wedding day.  We had a blast and i’m glad we can now remember more of the moments through our photos. we love the pics.  There’s so many that are truly amazing and totally capture the feeling behind the day.  They were well worth the wait.  I love a lot of the details shots of the flowers, the wine bottles, the table settings, the people signing the guestbook, the tiny flowers on the cake, etc.  The outdoor shots after the wedding turned out fabulous!  There’s nothing we appreciate more about living in the city is when we’re downtown and see all the city lights and the skyline and know that we live here…truly beautiful and those shots are my favorites!”

the above photo was my one of my top wedding photos from this shoot. during this wedding, i saw some amazing light and snuck the bride and groom outside and were able to get some great shots right around sunset and the magic hour.

mary and steve hired me last year for their recent duxbury wedding. the couple met at boston college and while she grew up in florida, they decided to get married near boston since they both live and work in the area. the town they chose to get married is duxbury. it is often a choice as a destination wedding location because it is a charming new england seaside town rich with historic details and filled with so many natural elements including bumpus park, a wild life preserves and a quaint harbor. mary got ready at a rented cottage with the help of her mother, and twin sisters caroline and kathleen. at first, i didn’t realize there were twins and because they were already in their bridesmaid dresses, i momentarily was a bit confused how one person could be in so many places at so many times. i am bad at telling twins apart i guess.

before driving over to the church, i was lucky that mary allocated some time for some photos. there was a gorgeous backdrop of autumn leaves. new england is the perfect place for taking in fantastic views of foliage. this november 6th wedding got the tail end of the vibrant colors and we were lucky for such amazing backgrounds to work with.

mary and her groom steve chose to see each other before their wedding in order to make some time for photos. they are part of an ever increasing amount of newlyweds who choose to do a first look. first looks are basically a moment set aside to see each other on the wedding day, before the walk down the aisle. the first look is done alone, not in front of your wedding guests, and it is documented with photos. historically, seeing each other before the wedding has been a hot topic, but i am noticing more and more couples want to get photos done beforehand rather than skip out on guests midway during their wedding day. even though the first time you lay eyes on each other as bride and groom will not be in front of those close to you, the benefit of doing this is that before your wedding ceremony, you can budget time for photos and still have time to mingle with friends and family during cocktail hour later. having a first look during late autumn weddings and early spring weddings is something important to think about. this time of year, days are shorter and with less sunlight, the possibility for outdoor photos for afternoon weddings is sometimes slim.

mary’s aunt created all the floral arrangements for her wedding including this arrangement called the bells of ireland. this is popular in ireland and in the boston area due to the large irish american population. i have a lot of brides asking for information about incorporating irish traditions in their wedding so below is a photo of the flower arrangement. while this one was used at the church, i have seen these also used as centerpieces for tables at wedding receptions.

the wedding ceremony was at Holy Family Church at 601 Tremont St. Duxbury, MA  02332 (781) 934-5055

the wedding reception was held nearby at duxbury bay maritime school located at 457 Washington Street
Duxbury, MA 02332 (781) 934-7555

before the wedding, mary had sent me snapshots of the wedding reception venue as it was just being built. the smith building at the duxbury bay maritime school is part of a state of the art facility directly on the water. it made for picturesque views of colorful trees in the distance, while sailboats dotted the bay under the blazing sunset. if you are looking for a unique location outside of boston, or are considering a destination wedding but don’t want to deal with traffic in the cape cod canal tunnel or want to go far for a nantucket or martha’s vineyard island wedding, duxbury is a perfect option.

with the bay as a backdrop, mary and steve braved the brisk seaside breeze and the result was an memorable set of seaside wedding photos.

after cocktail hour, the newlyweds enlisted silent chef for a french style dinner service. with all the weddings i have photographed over the years, this was my first wedding i shot that was served in this manner. french style dinner service offers waiters that bring a large presentation dish of the food (whether soup, salad or entree) to the guests. often, the waiters continue to refill the large dish until the guest indicates they are done.

silent chef is located at 113 Front Street Scituate, MA 02066 and their phone number is (781) 545-6665.

mary and steve thanks for selecting me as your wedding photographer! both jim and i had so much fun shooting your wedding!

wedding vendors that were used include:

wedding dj: beat train productions: ari with beat train is one of my favorite dj’s in boston. i will be photographing a wedding at the oceancliff hotel in newport, ri this summer where ari will be dj’ing. check him out at zu zu’s in cambridge, ma. beat train productions is listed in the little black book put out by style me pretty wedding blog.
wedding photographer: heather parker photography: available to shoot weddings in boston, chicago, and destination weddings including negril jamaica.
wedding caterer: silent chef: 113 Front Street Scituate, MA 02066 and their phone number is (781) 545-6665
wedding cermony venue: Holy Family Church at 601 Tremont St. Duxbury, MA 02332 (781) 934-5055
south shore boston wedding reception venue: duxbury bay maritime school 457 Washington Street Duxbury, MA 02332 (781) 934-7555. a newly designed, modern, loft-like feel for the interior, and historically inspired white cedar exterior that sits directly on duxbury bay.

one of my brides has a new nickname, jen the great. seriously! jen selected me as her boston wedding photographer this past summer. before her wedding, the engagement photos i took for her in chicago were featured on rock ‘n roll bride. when i find myself time after time getting engagement shoot requests against that same familiar skyline or in that oh so familiar tourist park, i can’t tell you how refreshing it is to get couples that want to shoot at a colorful mcdonalds, on abandoned elevated railroad tracks, or even in the couples’ loft apartment. jen is your quintessential offbeat bride in every way.
following the wedding, jen the great got my photography featured on the popular wedding website rock ‘n roll bride and on skull a day, and now today on the wildly popular blog for brides who thrive for something more unique: offbeat bride.thank you jen and grant for sharing with the world your awesome blue, skull infested, vans sneaker wedding with the entire world through the various blogs you have submitted to. i feel like we’ve gone on a blog tour and can’t wait to see what else you have in store!

things about jen and grant’s off-beat wedding that have made it so popular on the blogsphere:

  • use of skulls as a recurring theme throughout their wedding day
  • getting proposed to at a mcdonalds
  • wearing vans sneakers at the wedding
  • incorporating playstation (cufflinks, groom’s cake) at the wedding
  • having blue as the sole color at the wedding, and rocking it!
  • having a wedding dress with pockets
  • proudly displaying cartoon characters at your wedding
  • having the first dance to a song with lyrics that include “if a double-decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die” (listen here, yes i too am a smiths fan)

jen and grant had their wedding at hampshire house, boston’s most historic, sought after wedding venues and still pulled off a tasteful integration of many non-traditional details for their wedding.

cheers to you guys! (oh wait did i mention that they held their wedding above the famed cheers pub in boston?!)

what i love about creating captivating imagery for the hospitality, resort & architecture industries, is that it often allows a photographer to travel. most recently, i had the opportunity to photograph for moon dance resorts at their moon dance cliffs hotel location in negril, jamaica. before the shoot, i consulted a lot with my cousin keshara who is a production manager for GE Projects. she had previously done a lot of international resort photography with barbara kraft, one of the leading hospitality photographers, having work featured in architectural digest and other notable publications. i was excited to head down to jamaica.

after a nearly a full day of travel, i was met by a polite, informative and very friendly driver and we embarked on long drive (no freeways) from montego bay to negril, winding along the coast, and weaving through colorful villages. i arrived at the resort just as the sun was going down. i had just enough energy in me to get a brief tour of the grounds before hitting the hay. around 5am i got my canon and hasselblad cameras ready and ran around resort snapping some test shots under the early morning light. i shot all day and by sundown, i was tired enough to go to bed early. the second day had the most favorable skies. while shooting at moon dance cliffs and villas, i experienced the most exceptional 5-star service and met some of the nicest people i have ever met in my life. in the upcoming weeks, i aim to share more images from jamaica, including a wedding i photographed at moon dance villas. below are some examples of luxury resort architectural photography.

i was in duxbury, ma this weekend photographing a wedding and snapped this photo with my iPhone. i was talking to someone on the train about photography, and they asked what other kinds of photography other than weddings i shoot and i told them that my blog has become sort of a teaser section for wedding clients but that i would try to remember to post other types of shoots on here and passed them one of my cards. well, here are a few photos of some other projects that i should share. i will try to describe a bit of it.

first and foremost, though a lot of my shoots are local, many of them take me to interesting places, even allowing me to sit in the front sea of a cessna airplane!

the above architectural photography is of a home on nantucket island. for those who don’t know, nantucket island is east of the popular tourist destination of martha’s vineyard. on martha’s vineyard, i photographed this nice queen anne style summer cottage (below), which is owned by a software publisher by the name of peter norton, who created norton utilities and norton anti-virus.the above house has been published in a regional annual magazine issue by cape cod life publications. although i photograph a lot of historic preservation and restoration architectural photography, i also photograph modern architecture. massachusetts institute of technology commissioned steven holl architects to design a residence hall at the university. simmons hall as it is called, resembles an abstract sponge. i heard first hand that due to the cement and steel used throughout the building, mobile phone reception is virtually impossible. while many people hate it’s design, i would like to think equally as many people enjoy it. i personally think its at least a visually striking building if nothing else. the image below of the building was used by the Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole in a publication.i also went to barcelona to photograph the pavilion by mies van der rohe. it has an interesting story behind it and should really be called the german pavilion in barcelona.as you can see from the above images, i get to see a lot of nice buildings, homes, and other structures. though new buildings and restored homes that are often considered masterpieces are pleasant to look at, i find myself wanting to photograph the not-so-beautiful. here is a photo of one of the many post-katrina abandoned homes in new orleans, louisiana.as you can see, photography takes me many places. after tomorrow, i head to jamaica for more photo shoots and i will share photos when i get back to reality…

rebecca and chris contacted me after their milwaukee wiscosin wedding to have some more photos taken. rebecca wanted to rock the dress one more time. yes it was cold but under her gown, she wore nylons, runing shorts, and wore a stick-on heating pad to stay warm. the heating pads were $8 for a multi-pack. i brought my hasselblad and shot some film which i am very excited about, and though its not the instant gratification available with digital photography, medium format film is well worth the wait!

if you would like to sign up for a trash the dress photo session, i am offering a discount to any bride who makes a donation to brides against breast cancer. information on donating your wedding gown can be found here. please contact me for more information.

mamta and nishant had their engagement shoot in downtown chicago so that they could show their friends and family where their “home” was for several years. their upcoming wedding is in mumbai (formerly bombay). we met on an early brisk morning and avoided tourists, hitting many popular locations for photos in chicago. we talked a lot about indian wedding ceremonies such as mehndi and the sangeet/gaun parties,  as well as the shaadi and mandap. the reason i really enjoy indian weddings is because of the many ceremonies that happen with a backdrop of such vibrant colors. mamta and nishant will have a five day wedding and hundreds of wedding guests. during our shoot, we talked about holi; i am dying to photograph the festivals.

people often speak of having a storybook wedding. well, this wedding comes literally straight from teh storybooks of alice in wonderland. shortly after photographing sam & hezzie’s wedding at gallery 1028, i was hired for sam’s sister liza’s wedding. i am picky when it comes to photographing on holidays, so if i was going to forfeit halloween, it had to be for a fun shoot. they convinced me right away when i was informed that the wedding was going to be themed as a mad hatter tea party. i met liza at her brother’s wedding, and at the time, i had no idea i would get to work with her again. liza plays by her own rules, she is an offbeat bride. heck she even made her own blue wedding dress! with the help of her mother deborah who owns norton’s usa (a unique all-american general store), the wedding would go down in the books as being one of the most memorable for everyone in attendance. they merged a mad hatter tea party theme with elements of autumn. the wedding was held at home, in a strikingly beautiful, yet mysterious house. during the ceremony, the bride emerged from a secret bookcase door, surprising guests. the groom, richard, is from manchester, uk.

it was a real pleasure photographing this wedding, as there was such great scenery and carefully thought out decorations to work with. liza’s family has two amazing horses, and a barn full of teeny kittens!

from the mother of the bride:

Hi Heather!!! They are wonderful! Glad you had fun! We all looked with Sam’s computer yesterday and we’re thrilled. Thank you so much for coming and shooting Liza & Richards wedding.

“I didn’t get to see all of Sam and Hezi’s pics but what I did see are fabulous! You really are so very talented!
Thank you from the bottomof my heart
Deborah”

happy halloween everyone! don’t forget to adjust the time on your cameras to daylight savings time.
