the challenge continues! more photos at millenium park! i love this white sculpture better than cloud gate. the sculpture has these curves that take your eye around the negative space in a manner that reminds me of the images of one of my favorite photographers, herb ritts. he played around with lights and darks and curves to create refreshing images within a tired genre. the couple i photographed for this engagement shoot is having me photograph their wedding at the newly renovated spertus museum. spertus is just as much a piece of art as it is an architectural marvel. we were able to walk around inside touring the stark, beautiful spaces where the wedding ceremony and reception will be held. i even bumped into someone who was a guest at another jewish wedding i photographed recently.

i thought it would be a challenge to photograph couples at millenium park while still keeping it fresh, because it seems like more and more people choose this location. the truth is, i am often inspired by my subjects’ personality and the colors they are wearing and try to compose my images in a way that compliments this.

kelly and patrick were recently married and i had the pleasure of photographing their day. it began at hotel indigo, where the colors of the interior space were perfectly in concert with everything going on that day. kelly’s sister was the maid of honor and she joined their mother in helping prepare the bride for her wedding. with time to spare, we headed to the lobby and lounge and made great use of the unique chairs for some photos! after capturing every little detail and moment of kelly getting ready, i hopped in the limo with the ladies and grabbed a few shots as we headed to the wedding ceremony. i have noticed a trend recently where couples are looking for creative locations to tie the knot, galleries are a popular option. the groom had let me know in advance that he was planning a surprise first dance with the bride right after the ceremony. the newlyweds and i snuck outside amidst some fabulous natural light and grabbed a few shots before they returned inside to cut the cake. there were plenty of smiles to go along with the dancing, and even the children joined in.

“I cannot imagine a better photographer for our wedding. Her unobtrusive style was perfect, especially for my camera-shy husband, and she was very gracious and patient with all of the guests taking flash photos, which I can say from attending other weddings, is not always the case. Many guests commented on how much they liked her. She was always quick to respond to my questions– and most importantly, the photos turned out beautifully!”

the dress is from white chicago, you may find out more on their FAQ page, or email them at info@whitexchange.com. their phone number at their chicago wedding gown boutique is (312-397-1571).

before their wedding on the 24th of this month, michelle and tom wanted to meet to do a practice shoot since neither of them have never been in front of a professional photographer. michelle scouted out this kitschy coastal location and we saw many painted rocks, most of them were covered with short messages of love. i wonder if tom will come back in the wee hours and paint a message for michelle in time for their wedding.
who wants tom to paint something for michelle!?!? comment below!

lots of natural smiles, i think they are at ease with the camera!

we found what we thought was a time capsule but who knows. whatever it was, it wouldn’t budge and was staying shut.

along with my series of little vignettes of people, here’s one of their shoes. shoes show everyone’s personality.

we also found a nice arrangement of stones with a spot in the middle for a fire pit.

i wrapped up the shoot with a nice silhouette of the couple.

sam and abigail go together like peas and carrots. when i suggested to bring some personality to their engagement shoot they opted to bring along a frisbee and had fun playing a brief game in the park. abigail coordinated the outfits and the blue tied in very nice with the water and sky. i always recommend that my clients both gals and guys wear a matte translucent powder, like l’oreal translucide. it tends to reduce any shine due to sweat and oils on hot, humid days. i will be photographing sam and abigail’s upcoming wedding at the historic stan mansion.

“Heather is our wedding photographer and we instantly connected with her when we met her over the winter. I appreciate how responsive she was in responding to my initial email and flexible in meeting with her. She recently photographed our engagement shoot at the Lakefront, which is included in her wedding packages and she did a great job. Though we had a bit trouble find each other in the massive park, she did not appear frustrated and ensured that we got ample opportunity for pictures in. I liked how she kept us moving around during the photo shoot and made us feel comfortable while getting our picture taken (not something we do everyday). She provided us with our pictures online and on CD almost instantly and we were very pleased with the results. We look forward to our wedding photos in a couple months.”

here is a wedding with a great couple from vermont. gretchen and dave were married at the follen community church in lexington. the ceremony was in an octagonal and even had readings from the little prince. here was ample natural light, lots of rich woodwork, and the benches were in a crescent-shape towards the altar. the reception was held at the lyman estate in waltham where the couple made great use of outdoor tented dining followed by dancing in the mansion. there were smaller break-out rooms which made this venue a unique and comfortable setting to photograph in. the location is a good example of a federal period country estate, and is part of historic new england.

I was recently hired by Míele USA for a freelance project. Miele is a high-end appliances manufacturer based in Germany that I gained familiarity with though photographing residential architecture for years. Every so often, leading manufacturers make small changes in both the product design and the way they show the product, and I was called upon to document these changes for the company. It was interesting to see the wide range of commercial and residential appliacnes that could be custom fitted for the client or architect.
